Sessile Handbag

Winter 2009
This project is an exploration in merging natural forms with technology. It is hand knitted, felted, and appliqued with cotton "barnacles". Embroidered into the bag are white surface mount LEDs that alternately fade in and out, creating a gentle, pleasing light.
The bag is programmed using Lilypad Arduino. It was displayed at the Broadcast event at the Grey Area Foundation for the Arts and at the Open Make event at the Exploratorium.

The Sessile Handbag is currently on display at the Futuro Textiles exhibit, which will be touring Barcelona, Cordoba, Prato, and Renaix in the next two years.
